Knights softball garners third weekly honor this spring

The Big 12 Conference named UCF freshman left-handed pitcher/outfielder Hildie Dempsey Freshman of the Week on Tuesday.

Dempsey earned her first Big 12 weekly honor and became the third Knights pitcher to garner an achievement from the league this season—joining freshman right-handed pitcher Ava Stuewe (week one Freshman of the Week) and redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher Isabella Vega (week two Pitcher of the Week).

The recent accolade also made UCF softball the only program to have been recognized in each of the first three Big 12 Conference weekly awards this spring.

Dempsey delivered a dominant performance against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (7-9, 0-0 ACC) in the penultimate game of the SpaceU Classic on Sunday.

The young pitcher surrendered only one unearned run on three hits and notched a career high of five strikeouts while throwing a 1.80 ERA after pitching all seven innings.

UCF continues its homestand, starting with a matchup against the Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Owls (12-5, 0-0 ACC) at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at the UCF Softball Complex.
