Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark announced the switch from the ASB GlassFloor court to a hardwood floor for the rest of the 2026 Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament in Kansas City, MO, in a statement on Thursday night.
“After consultation with the coaches of our four Semifinal teams, I have decided that in order to provide our student-athletes with the greatest level of comfort on a huge stage this weekend, we will transition to a hardwood court for the remainder of the Tournament,” Yormark said in the statement. “We look forward to a great Semifinals and Championship Game.”
The LED glass floor has sparked mixed reviews of its playability throughout the tournament.
Arizona Wildcats redshirt junior wing Taj Manning said the video sports floor is “pretty bad” and described the surface as slippery.
“The lights and stuff caused Khamari [McGriff] to get a migraine,” Manning told the media on Wednesday. “It’s a bad floor. They shouldn’t bring it back.”
While Houston Cougars redshirt senior guard Emanuel Sharp said there’s no advantage gained, calling the LED glass floor an even playing field. “I thought the floor was fine,” Sharp said in the postgame conference on Thursday. “I fall on a regular, you know, it wasn’t nothing different. I don’t think it’s crazy.”
His teammate, freshman guard Kingston Flemming, added, “Both teams have to play on the floor. It wasn’t the floor’s fault that one team won and one team lost. It was all about the players.”
Kansas Jayhawks head coach Bill Self said that although he had no involvement in the decision, it is the right thing to do.
“The narrative tomorrow needs to be about the two games and not about somebody slipping on the floor,” Self said to the media. “If there’s a chance anybody’s going to slide or slip, I think the league is smart to make sure that’s not the story.”
ASB GlassFloor has not issued a statement since the Big 12 Conference’s announcement.
The 2026 Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament will stay on schedule, set to end on Sunday, where the remaining contenders fight for a spot in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.
